THE UNLIKELY MURDERER

A Compelling and Psychologically Dense Attempt to Unravel a Crime that Shook a Nation at its Core

Join AARHUS SERIES for an exclusive preview of the two first episodes of The Unlikely Murderer.

An assassinated Primeminister. A police investigation that leads nowhere. What happened that night in Stockholm? And who is Stig Engström – the man who was designated as the probable killer.

The Swedish five part limited series is a fictional interpretation of the murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986 based on the the award-winning book The Unlikely Murderer from 2018 written by Thomas Pettersson.

The story is especially concerned with Stig Engström, the graphic designer who was named as the probable murderer, and how he managed to elude justice right up to his death through a combination of audacity, luck, and a perplexed police force. Robert Gustafsson, one of Sweden’s most beloved comedians and actors, plays the lead role as Stig Engström.

As such, the drama series deals with a past that has settled as a national trauma within the Swedish people. The story explores questions like what makes someone a murderer and who feels compelled to target a prime minister for assassination? And finally, how did this sad, solipsistic figure of Stig Engström elude police detection?

Join scriptwriters Wilhelm Berhmann and Niklas Rockström (Caliphate, Before We Die) for the screening and a talk about The Unlikely Murderer, a prominent Swedish contribution to the Nordic Noir scene and possibly, the greatest real-life whodunit in Swedish history.
